The first big event of the Fine and Performing Arts calendar is the HS Great Works Concert. This event brings together the various HS Music performance classes to perform individual numbers but, more importantly, to collaborate on a piece of significant music. Past years have performed extracts from such as Bizet’s Carmen Burana and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. This year the group will join together to explore extracts from two famous pieces: John Rutter’s Magnificat and George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
To add to the excitement of exploring such great music, students will this year play alongside special guest musicians for the Manila Symphony Orchestra. This is an amazing opportunity for our students to collaborate with and learn from professionals. In addition to playing the collaborative pieces, the orchestra will also be treating the audience to a few individual pieces.
This year we are also including a piano solo from ISM’s very own Lisa Zheng. Lisa, who is a senior this year, has recently performed a solo recital at the CCP Theatre and is one of the top piano talents currently playing in Manila.
Hope to see you, come Tuesday, September 22nd. This is a free concert and no tickets are not required (free rather than assigned seating). Doors open at 5.10pm and the show begins at 5.30pm.
Get your tickets now for the 9th annual Tri-M Jazz Night. This year, the Tri-M council has decided to try a different format for the student organised event. Due to the proximity to IB exams, the celebration of jazz music and ISM student talent is slightly earlier than other years, with a 3pm start time. The program features small ensembles instead of full class groups. Also, instead of a full buffet meal, we will enjoy a catered dessert buffet.
The program kicks off at 3 pm in the Little Theater. Tickets are available at the ISM Cashier or at the door starting from 3:00pm.
It’s going to be an exciting showcase of student talent, as always! We hope to see you there.

Congratulations to all of our IASAS Music delegates for representing ISM so well at Taipei American School. Based on exceptional performances during the solo and ensemble adjudications on Thursday and Friday, ISM had many students nominated for the Showcase Recital Each Performance group had the honor and and yet difficult task of choosing only one nominated soloist or ensemble group per performance area to perform. Please see this post listing the performers. An additional honor was bestowed on ISM pianist Yining Zhang, who was chosen to be the sole pianist for the Festival Concert on Saturday evening.
Check the TAS Cultural Convention Website for a recording taken from the livestream of the Festival Concert on Saturday evening. There are also links to team photos and photos taken through out the day during rehearsals and adjudications. I have taken a quick skim through and there are many photos of the ISM Music delegates. See if you can spot the Bearcats!

Our 2011-12 concert season officially kicks off on Wednesday, November 16th with the HS Legends of Jazz Concert showcasing the talents of all of our Band, Strings and Choral students. Groups performing will be:
Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Concert Choir, Show Choir and of course, Jazz Band.
It will be a wonderful evening of great works from the likes of Irving Berlin, Jeff Jarvis, D. Bruebeck and Duke Ellington.
As I am writing this post, I realise that my toes are tapping and I am swaying a little in my office chair. The reason – Concert Band is on the other side of my office wall right now rehearsing “When the Saints Go Marching In.” They sound fantastic. They have now moved on to Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.” You really can not miss this concert.
See you in the FAT on November 16th at 5:30 pm.
