IASAS Dance Auditions

Ms. Wong and Ms. Rankin look forward to working with you. We will be exploring the play  “Waiting for Godot: by Samuel Becket. We are not looking for a literal retelling of the play but we wish to explore the themes of repetition, waiting, filling the space, faith and nihilism through dance.
Auditions will be Thursday November 3rd and  Friday November 4th in the HS Dance room from 3.15 – 4.45 pm.  Please sign up on the form outside the FINE ARTS Office.
Thursday’s audition will require you to perform a 1 minute prepared dance based on your interpretation of the title.  Please be able to explain your piece. As well as working with prescribed choreography.
Friday’s audition will include devising.
Places will not be announced until Wednesday 9th November as Drama auditions will take place on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th.

IASAS Drama Auditions

WHEN and WHERE: IASAS Drama auditions are afterschool on Wednesday, November 2nd and Monday, November 7th. You will need to attend both days to try out for IASAS Drama.  Both parts of the audition will take place in the HS Dance room 3050.

What does the audition involve? You need to come to both phases of the audition to be considered. On the Wednesday, we will be devising scenes. You will then be given specific tasks for developing these and be prepared to present on the Monday. Obviously, your ability to touch base with your scene partners will be part of the process.

What should I do before the audition? Number 1 is to complete this audition form before October 21st

IASAS DRAMA 2016/17 AUDITION FORM

Do I need to prepare anything for the audition? i don’t need any prepared scenes but you should research ideas that you can use in the devising process beforehand. See below for a list of starting points.

What are we looking for? This will be a devised ensemble performance utilizing physical theatre so the audition process will look for the following skills:

  • *Adding or developing ideas during devising
*Researching and developing material in between rehearsals
    *Physical and spatial awareness
*Willingness to act upon an idea quickly without too much discussion (Do it rather than talk about it! Follow your instincts!)
*Ability to establish clearly defined characters in a short space of time

Starting Point for Devising: The German legend of Faust

Faust was a celebrated academic yet dissatisfied with life. In exchange for infinite wisdom and power, he promises his soul to the devil. We will take this basic idea and explore what this might mean in a 21st century context. What aspects of your humanity would you give up in order to get what you want? Areas to research before auditioning:

  • The basic outline of the legend of Faust (both Goethe and Marlow versions). Wikipedia is fine.
  • What it means to make a Faustian deal
  • The concept of Duende, both the idea of sprites but also in connection to the soul and art.
  • Current news about people using the internet to gain power/ knowledge or using technology to enhance their natural abilities (e.g. Google glasses)
  • Any other ideas you get from your research!

New ATAC/ FAO Sport & Activity sign ups

All HS students have recently received an email from Mr. Collett, which includes links to the new ATAC/ FAO sign up system. The aim of this system is to improve safety, communication and student support for co-curricular activities.
Thanks to all students that have registered via the ATAC/ FAO online system for your sports and cultural activities for this school year. PLEASE check with your parents that they have received an email to approve your selections and that they do so. The system is currently showing many students whose parents have approved BUT it is also showing many students as PENDING and without parent approval.
We require your parent to approve in order for you to take part in S1 sports, year round activities and the HS play.
Again please register if you have not done so already (links are below) and check that your parents have received an email to approve and ask them to complete their part of the process by approving your selections. There was a small glitch with this but it has been fixed now.
Remember tryouts for Soccer/XC and Volleyball start on Thursday and the HS Play auditions start next Wednesday. Tryouts schedules and S1 practice schedules are posted on ATAC blog and re on school notice boards. The HS Play cast and crew Google form sign ups are on this blog or the Fine Arts Council Google + community.

IASAS Music Cultural Convention- Host Families needed!

This year ISM has the honour of hosting IASAS Music. This exciting event  brings together 162 student musicians from across the IASAS network.  Each school brings 27 students from various Music programs: 8 from Band, 8 from Choir, 8 from Strings and 3 piano players.  Throughout the convention each student will perform a solo, which is critiqued by our adjudicators (professional musicians from Manila). The various octets will then perform a selection of pieces as a group. The whole convention culminates in a Gala concert of Saturday night where our International guest conductors bring together large group performances.

The biggest challenge of hosting any event is definitely making sure we have enough beds to house our guests. Please help by clicking the link below and filling out the housing form. Housing is a fun way to feel part of the event and also beneficial because of the international friendships it fosters. All students coming are High School age but you  don’t have to be in high school to offer up a bed.

  • Nov. 5 and 6 (3-5pm at the FAT)
  • Nov. 9 and 10 (3-5pm at the Dance Room)

IASAS Cultural Convention Auditions begin

This week, the first auditions for  IASAS Cultural Convention are taking place. For those new to ISM, Cultural Convention is actually 3 separate events hosted by 3 different IASAS schools. This year, IASAS CC is March 3rd, 4th and 5th and is held in the following places:

  • Debate & Forensics hosted by ISKL in Kuala Lumpur

This week we see Music auditions taking place. Students should have already talked to the IASAS coaches if they want to be involved. These are Ms. Carrie Grev for Vocals, Mr. Tom Nazareno for Band and Mr. Giovanni Bobbise for Strings.

In the first week after October break, Drama auditions will take place in the FAT on November 5th & 6th  and then Dance on the 18th. This year, Ms. Tami Monsod and Ms. Yek Barlongay will direct a joint Dance/ Drama piece, which will certainly be an exciting event.

Art has a selection process that happens within G22 Art classes.

Debate and Forensics coaches will also start selections in November so students should watch out for details of these mentioned in assembly and posted on the Fine Arts Office notice board.
