Fast + Fresh Drama Festival- call for participants

When is Fast + Fresh? The Manila Fast and Fresh Drama Festival is being held on Saturday, January 27th.
What does the festival involve? Groups of 3 to 6 students from different Manila schools devise a  10-minute plays to share. There are category prises such as Best Student Director or Best Dramatic Actor. Students can act, direct or work as crew member.  The festival started in Australia and now takes place in many countries around the world.  This year ISM is hosting the Manila festival. The time commitment up until Jan 27th is 2 to 3 rehearsals a week, depending on your group’s arrangements.
How do I get involved? If you would like to act in or direct one of the ISM entries, please fill out this form and then we’ll meet on Monday, November 20th at 3pm in the AMR.
(Hopefully, the people involved with this would then go on to work on the opening ceremony perfromance for IASAS Art/ Dance/ Drama/ Tech, which ISM is also hosting from March 1st to 3rd.)

IASAS Technical and Production team application

This year we are hosting IASAS Cultural Convention for Art, Dance, Drama and Tech. We therefore need a team of HS students to run the technical and production aspects of the convention. Some students will work directly with the ISM group while others will work with all visiting schools to support their shows. Please complete this form by 5pm on Friday, November 10th if you wish to be considered:

HS Play 2017: In The Heights

This year’s HS Play,  In the Heights, opens for a 3-night run on Thursday, October 19th. Tickets are now available from the ISM Cashier’s Office or the Electronic Kiosk. Here is the essential details:

  • Show Times: Thursday, Oct 19th @6pm/ Friday, Oct 20th @6:30pm/ Saturday, Oct 21st@6:30pm
  • Run time: 2 hour and 5 minutes, which includes a 15 minute intermission.
  • Tickets: 150PHP for students/ 300PHP for adults
  • Outside Guests: If you have friends or family from out side ISM who wish to watch, please make sure you communicate with ISM security at least a day in advance to arrange clearance. As an ISM ID holder, you can vouch for them to enter the campus.

Plot: In The Heights examines how immigration shapes a person’s concept of home. The action centres around residents of New York’s ethnically diverse Washington Heights as they face the consequences of impending gentrification. Usnavi, the proprietor of the corner bodega, guides us through a  neighborhood where the beats of hip-hop, salsa and soul punctuate the highs and lows of life. Over three of the hottest days in July 2008, fortunes shift, romance blooms, and tempers flair. But with a little ‘Paciencia Y Fe’, the characters may still be able to reconcile their love for distant familial roots with their lives in the United States.

Background: Washington Heights in New York has been shaped by several waves of migration. During the early 20th century, it was home to mainly European immigrants, including significant Irish and Jewish populations. However, by the 1980’s many Hispanic groups, including Dominicans, Cubans and Puerto Ricans, had also come to call it home. Lin Manuel Miranda, the creator of In the Heights, wanted to celebrate the vibrate sense of community that comes with such diversity. He originally staged In the Heights during his sophomore year of college. Three senior students and an alumnus, Thomas Kali, were so taken by the show, they convinced Miranda to produce a revised version with a view to gaining Broadway release. Five drafts and eight years later, the show opened on Broadway, with Miranda in the lead role and Kali as the director. In 2008, the show was awarded both the Tony and Grammy for Best Musical.

Who is this show suitable for? In The Heights is a full length Broadway musical.  This means the First Act is an hour and 5 minutes and the Second Act is 50 minutes.  It is made up of big dance and singing numbers mixed with some wonderful duets and solos. The whole show is high energy and will entertain most ages that can sit for the length of the show. That said, there are some mature themes such as identity and relationships, a few innuendos, and some mild cussing such as ‘damn’.  One scene is based in a salsa bar and there are also a few romantic scenes. Another thing to note is that several characters are Christians so there is are quite a few references to God. The websites I have read suggest that families who have brought young children have found that content that might be seen as too mature went over the heads of their children anyway. Children seemed to be focused more on the big, fun scenes.  In summary, depending on the sensitivities of your child and family, most Grade 7 or above students should  be fine to watch by themselves. Grade 6 and below would be better suited to coming with adult supervision, but will still enjoy the big dance and singing numbers.

Video, Photos and Phones: This is a licensed show and ISM has therefore signed a legal contract regarding the distribution of images and video. Please DO NOT bring cameras to the show. Also, please be aware that you will need to have a phone that can be put into airplane mode because we are using so many microphones, which pick up texts etc.

Show synopsis:

17th century writer Miguel Cervantes wrote the famous book Don Quixote. In this musical, Cervantes decides to tell Don Quixote’s story one last time before his manual script is burnt. The musical is therefore a play-within-a-play, where the plot jumps back and forth between Cervantes the story teller and the adventures of Don Quixote the ‘crazy’ knight. As Don Quixote and Sancho search of adventures, they end up fighting wind mills, fall for the beautiful Aldonza, overcomes bandits, are robbed and finally stands up to their arch enemy.

MAN OF LA MANCHA became one of the most successful musicals in Broadway history when it was first released , winning 5 Tony awards in 1966. Powerful, brutal, hilarious, and heartbreaking, MAN OF LA MANCHA celebrates the perseverance of a man who refuses to relinquish his ideals or his passion. Sure, he is a little crazy, but sometimes that is what is needed if we are to pursue our passions in life. The  scores most famous and enduring number is “The Impossible Dream”

Design concept for this performance:

You will notice that all the costumes and set design have a distinctly Filipino style!

100% Dance- April 20th, 2017 @3:30pm in the FAT

ISM’s Dance Company presents their final dances for the year on April 20th at 3:30pm in the FAT. This year’s theme is Dancing Through The Years. Expect to see a wide range of dance styles explored as students take on choreographing their own work. This is the penultimate day for G12 students at school so the company will also be dancing for the last time with the group. Tickets are not needed and it is free seating, so come support this celebration of dance!

HS Music Finale Concert- April 4th @5:30pm in the FAT

The HS Finale Concert is on Tuesday, April 4th and starts at 5:30pm in the FAT. This is a celebration the semester’s work  in all HS Music classes and also the last opportunity for our Grade 12 musicians to perform with their class.  For many, music has been a strong part of their ISM identity and it is therefore often quite an emotional experience for them.

This year’s theme explores the concept of musical journeys, whether that be a cerebration of a physical journey, an exploration of a metaphorical journey, or simply the journey in one’s mind as they listen to music.   So get your passport ready and be prepared to travel some wonderful places! Here is a list of the groups involved and pieces they will play ( this is not the actual performance order) :
