Get ready to be transported back to the 1980’s with this year’s High School play. Shake the Spears: Much Ado About Nothing is devised around the plot outline of this popular Shakespearean comedy but shifts the setting to small town Messina, Iowa. Director Tami Monsod has been working with students since August to create a modern retelling, where the action is punctuated by several 80’s music hits and some great dance numbers.
Plot: Since leaving town, local boy Benedict has made it big as lead singer of the nationally acclaimed band Shake the Spears. At the invitation of Messina’s mayor, the group returns to perform a special show. The band’s presence ignites new love, renews old flames, and provokes several intrigues along the way.
Content: This comedy includes several fun dance numbers, a band playing 80’s pop songs, and many comic characters so is great entertainment for all of the family. There is some mature content (mostly innuendo) and some serious moments the require focus so it is recommended that students Grade 6 or below come with an adult.
