Here is a PDF of the official IASAS Music Cultural Convention program for 2016, which takes place between the 3rd and 5th of March. This our once-in-six-years opportunity to host the event so we do hope you can make time to come and enjoy some amazing music.
Adjudications and Festival Showcase: The first aspect of the convention are adjudications of solo and school derived ensembles. Students receive feedback from experts in their field. We are lucky enough to have some of the best musicians and / or music lecturers in the Philippines as our adjudicators. (Please read the program attached above for biographies of each adjudicator.) The adjudication schedule for solos and ensembles becomes final on Wednesday and will be posted then. After two days of adjudication each school has students selected to represent them in the Festival Showcase Recital, which begins at 6pm on Friday on March 4th.
Festival Repertoire and Festival Concert: The second aspect of the convention is working with professional conductors to learn about preparation for large concerts. The Guest Conductors all selected repertoire for the groups back in October and the groups have been learning the pieces for the past few months. This will culminate in a Gala Festival Concert, starting at 4pm on Saturday, March 5th. The conductors we have coming are all professionals who have worked on the international music scene:
Choir- Dr. Joel Navarro, who is originally from Manila but currently Singapore-based, is lecturing at the Singapore Bible College after 12 years as a Professor of Choir at Calvin College in the U.S.
Orchestra- Paul Chiang, the artistic director and lead conductor of Philharmonia Moments Musicaux, who are based in Taiwan . (Paul is also currently the Principle Guest Conductor of Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra of Greece.)
Band- Dr. Peter Boonshaft is currently on the faculty of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, where he is Professor of Music and Director of the Graduate Conducting Program. He is also a critically acclaimed author of many musical texts.
